Steve Yzerman Biography

Steve Yzerman is currently the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightening in the National Hockey League. However, he is also a retired professional ice hockey player himself. Yzerman was drafted in the 1983 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, with whom he played the entirety of his professional career with, entailing fourteen seasons. Having been born in Cranbrook, British Colombia, Canada, Yzerman played for his hometown Junior A hockey team and was then drafted by the Ontario Hockey League. While the NHL originally felt they were on Yzerman, they were very quickly proven wrong when he finished second in rookie of the year voting and came to be the first 18-year old to play in an All Star game. Yzerman did not stop there, becoming so valuable to the Red Wings that he was named captain before the age of 21 and served as the team's captain for the next two decades, retiring as the longest-serving captain of any major league sports team in North American history. Yzerman also became one the few players to win an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year, in 2002. After earning a variety of prestigious other awards throughout his thirteen seasons with the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings, Yzerman humbly retired in 2006, leaving a mark as the sixth all-time leading scorer in NHL history. If the NHL was ever wrong about something, it was their presumption that they were for 18-year old Steve Yzerman.
