Rod Langway Biography

Rod Langway had to be convinced to play hockey at the University of New Hampshire, but nobody had to be convinced of his skills. As a left-handed defenceman, Langway was drafted into both the NHL and WHA in 1977 and after one season with the Birmingham Bulls, he joined the Montreal Canadiens in 1978. After 4 seasons with the Canadiens, including a Stanley Cup victory in his first season, Langway was traded to the Washington Capitals to help save the franchise. He helped lead the Capitals to 11 straight postseason appearances and was the winner of the Norris Trophy for the NHL's top defenceman. Langway was captain for all 11 seasons with the Captains and was selected to 6 All-Star games. After retiring from the NHL, he spent several seasons as a player-coach in the IHL and AHL and by 2012 had been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame.
