Rod Gilbert Biography

After a terrifying injury during his Ontario Hockey Association days, Rod Gilbert recovered to the surprise of many and began his NHL career in 1960 with the New York Rangers. Gilbert quickly made a name for himself as one of the stars in the NHL and a fan favorite for the New York faithful. Despite multiple back surgeries throughout his career, Gilbert went on to have an 18 year career with the Rangers and still holds the team records for career goals (406) and points (1021). Gilbert was an 8-time all-star during his career and played for the feared “Goal-a-Game” line with fellow Rangers Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle. After initially holding out during the ’77-’78 season, Gilbert returned but had clearly lost a step in his game. He retired after the season and just one year later became the first Ranger to have their jersey retired at Madison Square Garden. In 1982 Gilbert was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame and currently holds a back office position with his former team. ;
