Ray Scapinello Biography
Ray Scapinello is a retired NHL linesman. He has the distinction of having the longest on-ice career of anyone in the history of the league. Although Ray never made it to the ice as a player, after he stopped playing the game at age 21, he was a skilled skater, which led him in a new direction. In the late 1960’s Ray joined the Guelph Referees Association where he began officiating games. In his first attempt to become a rookie NHL official he failed, but he was determined, and worked for another year to get better, when he did make the cut in 1971 at the age of 24. Scapinello officiated the first of his 21 Stanley Cup Finals in 1980 and was regarded so highly that he was selected as one of the four officials to work in the 1998 Winter Olympics. Ray decided to end his career the same place he started it in 1971 in a game between the Sabres and Maple Leafs. After 33 season he officiated more the 2,500 regular season games, 426 playoff games, and he never once missed a game due to injury or illness.
