Paul Coffey Biography


Paul Coffey is a retired NHL player who played for nine teams over his career. Coffey broke into the ;league in 1980 after being drafted in the first round of the draft by the Edmonton Oilers. He reached his potential in 1981, scoring 89 points and being named a second team all-star. Coffey would go on to set multiple records for a defenseman, including setting the record for most goals scored in the playoffs in ;1985, in route to winning another Stanley Cup title. In 1990, Coffey became the second defenseman to ever score 1000 points, doing so in a record 770 games. That same season, Coffey won his fourth Stanley ;Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 1992, Coffey was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, and then traded to the Detroit Red Wings 2 years later. After short stints with the Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks, Coffey would spend his final seasons with the Boston Bruins until retiring in 2001. Coffey would finish his storied career ranked 13th all-time in points scored, and was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
