Mark Howe Biography

Mark Howe was born in Detroit in May of 1955 to the hockey legend Gordie Howe. Following in his father's footsteps, he played junior hockey for the Detroit Jr. Red Rings throughout his childhood, outset to fulfill his passion at a young age. By a mere sixteen years old, Howe had competed in the 1972 Olympics and earned a Silver Medal. Two years later, he was chosen as the 25th overall pick in the 1974 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins. Throughout his career, Howe also played for the WHA's Houston Aeros and New England Whalers, along with the NHL's Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Detroit Red Wings. He suffered from one of the more illustrious injuries in the NHL, when in 1980, he incurred a five inch gash causing infections in his upper thigh after sliding into the pointed metal center of the net, which ultimately prompted the NHL to change the style of the nets to how they look today, without this metal pole jutting out of the center. Coming back and continuing to play for fifteen more years, Howe retired from the sport in 1995 while with the Detroit Red Wings but remained in the Detroit organization, working in the hockey operations department as a video coach and later a pro scout. Howe has been inducted into the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame alongside his father and brother, two notable hockey players, as well. ;
