John Cullen was a two-time NHL All-Star who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay Lightning.Cullen is best known for successful beating Non-Hodgkin lymphoma towards the end of his career.He went through 18 months of treatment, had to get a bone marrow transplant, but returned to the ice with the Lightning.In his first game back, Cullen scored the game-winning goal in an exhibition.Though he did not play much longer past that, the NHL honored him with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for his perseverance.The IHL also renamed their Comeback Player of the Year award after him.Cullen's mother passed away from skin cancer while he was still in high school.After his playing career, he coached with Tampa Bay for a season before getting involved in the car business.Cullen was originally a college star at Boston University and left as the school's all-time leading scorer.;
