Joe Nieuwendyk Biography

Joe Nieuwendyk was selected in the second round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames and went on to play 20 seasons in the NHL for the Flames, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers. Nieuwendyk was born in Ontario, Canada and grew up playing hockey with his uncle, who played in the NHL and his best friend, Gary Roberts, who would also go on to play in the NHL. After being drafted he helped the Canadian National Team to a silver medal at the 1986 World Junior Championship and then joined the Flames in the NHL and earned the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the year in 1987. During his decorated 20-year career in the NHL he scored 564 goals and added 562 assists for a total of 1,126 points in 1,257 career games, and helped Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils to Stanley Cup titles in 1989, 1999 and 2003 respectively. ;
