Jim Benning Biography
Jim Benning is the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, a position he was originally named to in 2014. He was previously the assistant general manager of the Boston Bruins from 2004-2014. Benning was part of the executive team that won a Stanley Cup in 2011. Before heading to Boston, he was a scout and then the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Buffalo Sabres. After retiring from his on-ice career, Benning began as an amateur scout with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993. He had a nine-year playing career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Canucks. The Maple Leafs originally made him the sixth overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and Benning debuted that year. In his third season, Benning scored 51 points and was named an All-Star. After spending his first five seasons in Toronto, he was traded midway through the 1986-87 season to the Canucks. Benning retired in 1992 after multiple comeback attempts. ;
