Ed Olczyk Biography


After winning a national title in his midget hockey career, Ed Olczyk went up to Canada to play junior hockey before joining U.S. Olympic hockey team and being selected in the 1984 NHL Draft. In the NHL, Olczyk began his career with the Chicago Blackhawks but spent most of his career as a key trade piece, moving to 6 different teams in his 16 year career. Olczyk played the center position and scored 342 goals in 1031 games including one Stanley Cup championship in the ’93-’94 season with the New York Rangers. Olczyk played for Team USA on an international stage from 1984-1993, with their best finish coming in the 1991 Canada Cup (2nd Place). After retiring from the game, Olczyk began commentating before being named head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the ’03-’04 & ’05-’06 seasons, compiling a career coaching record of 31-64-8. After being fired from the Penguins, Olczyk resumed his role as a commentator and has been the lead analyst for the last two Winter Olympic Games. In 2012 he was selected in the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and continues to color commentate for the Chicago Blackhawks.
